If Only...

If only I had wings,
I'd fly right into your arms.
Those loving hugs and and your soft touch
My body misses much!

If only I had a heart
I'd bleed just for you
The midnight hues of reds, purples and blues
Don't you know it was all so true!

If only I had a mind,
Where I could fly back in time
And feel the warmth, the passion, the lust
And our lives rely on trust!

If only I had a dream
And you and I were intertwined
Forever a memory, always present, always mine
Now wouldn't that be just fine!

If only I had time
To rewind, to laugh, to unwind
With you right here, by my side
Our hearts the only guide!

If only I had the power
To turn the hands of time
I'd go right back to the times of delight
Moments where darkness saw the light

If only love was easy
Our hearts never meant to be broken
Every waking hour our smiles collide
Every dream the mind delights

Set Me Free (A Song With No Tune As Yet!)

It was a warm summer's day
The sun was burning my skin
Still I went out without complain
With the man who I loved deep within

He took me out for ice cream
Mine was fig and honey  and his rum with raisin
We sat outside, with love in our eyes
And talked about a future that we could begin

Chorus:
He said "I'll be back in a minute"
That's the day he left
Now its clouds that separate us
Sinking me in loneliness
I wish that I had told him
To wait for one more moment
A moment that would have saved him
And kept him here with me
Now all I feel is darkness
Growing deeper inside of me

A loud crash, people screaming
My heart just stopped beating
I turned around and he was on the ground
I could see he was bleeding

I ran to him, held him in my arms
The warm blood flowing down
I held him close
Wishing my tears could heal
Just listening to him breathing

Chorus

Through the night we struggled
The people all a blur
Sirens blaring, nurses rushing
Doctors all in their coats

Would I see his face
That smile that could save me from all this turmoil
Would he survive
To tell me that he loved me
Would he wake up
To give me the ring he held so close

Chorus

The doctor came towards me
A strange look on his face
And in that moment time stood frozen
I knew my lover was gone

Tears steamed down my face
They went unchecked
The sorrow inside was a cut with a knife
And I didn't know if it was all real

Chorus

The years have gone by
I buried my hurt and my pain
My heart still bears the scars
I still wear that ring around my neck

Now I've come to realize
I can't live in hate and regret and I can't just die
He would have wanted me to smile
He would want me to be alive

He said "I'll be back in a minute"
That's the day he left
Now its clouds that separate us
I know he's looking down
Smiling as he sees me
Choosing life and not backing down
I wish that I had told him
To wait for one more moment
A moment that would have saved him
And kept him here with me
But I know he loved me
And that memory sets me free

Forever Saved!

Lord, I'm broken
Lying helpless, so lonely
Lord, I'm a mess
I'm hurting from within, no will to live
Lord, I'm tired
Sometimes life seems so tough
Lord, I'm bitter
I wish I was someone else

Heal my heart Lord, put those puzzle pieces together
Mend my mind Lord, I need to find a reason
Save my soul Lord, I need a Saviour
Pick me up, hold me close,
I need you right now.

Lord, I'm restless
Life isn't getting better
Lord, I'm fighting
But I'm not strong enough
Lord, I'm dreaming
But it all feels so hopeless
Lord, I'm crying
Please show me the way

Lord, I'm breathing
One more day has passed me by
Lord, I'm smiling
I see the silver lining in my life
Lord, I'm hopeful
Your mercy and grace is all I feel
Lord, I'm depending
You are all I need

Lord, I'm grateful
You gave me comfort through other people
Lord, I'm blessed
Today my smile is meaningful
Lord, I'm at peace
My heart is able to be still
Lord, I know You
I'm forever saved

(I wrote this after I spent a few days with a cousin who was struggling with drugs, family issues and a sense of irrelevance. I know exactly how he felt. But by God's grace the ending is my life story. And I pray that he too will find peace in knowing the Living God)

My Prayer For You Nathan

I pray that you will know the Lord at a young and tender age,
I pray the Lord will be part of the story of your life, in each and every page.

I pray with every sunrise you'll learn to shine and sing,
I pray with every moon rise you'll be thankful for the big and little things.

I pray that through the darkest gloom you'll know that He always cares,
I pray that at every pinnacle of what you call success you'll know who got you there.

I pray with every challenge that comes your way you'll strive to do your best,
I pray with every defeat you face you'll grow wiser in the least.

I pray the lives of Daniel and Job will challenge you to be true,
I pray the lives of Paul and David will your strength each day renew.

I pray that you will always remember that we love you dearly,
I pray that you will know at all times we're here for you sincerely.

They Just Don’t Tell You!

So having a baby has always been on our minds. And it was so exciting talking about it, planning it out and finally getting there! Then it starts…

There are a whole lot of things people don’t tell you when you get pregnant or before!

Throwing up sucks!
If you’re lucky, the nausea will last three to four months. Put it just totally sucks! Throwing up morning, afternoon, evening and night is not such a great deal you just signed up for. There will be moments of utter depression where you wish you could turn back time and not be pregnant! And then you’ll think “What kind of a mother am I gonna be wishing I wasn’t pregnant, wishing to turn back time!” It’s all ok. Think it, let the frustration out. Talk to your husband. He needs to know what inner turmoil you are going through. Only then can he be supportive!

 Feeling like an old lady
“Hey! Let’s go out”, my friends and family would say. And me, “Oh crap! OUT! Really?” Every single day you’ll be pushing yourself. Yes the second trimester is quite an enjoyable phase but trust me. Your body will feel so heavy, your mind will tell you a hundred reasons not to go, people will have a thousand reasons for you not to travel. But just do it! Push yourself. Yes you will feel tired, you might lose a little sleep but after you’ve had fun, laughed, talked, eaten… YOU FEEL GOOD! So get out and do things. It’s the best!

An afternoon snooze is a treat!
I used to feel horrible when I had to sleep two whole hours in the afternoon! The worst is when we are out visiting people and all I can think of is my bed. Just sleep where ever you are! And I’m not kidding. Any rest post lunch is a mind saver, body ache reliever and a true treat for yourself. Don’t worry about what others think. Only you know what you’re going through. Others can speculate, say “Yeah I know how it is”, wonder what’s wrong with you. Each pregnancy is different. You know how much your body can take. Don’t push it!

Moving like an old fart
Get used to it. Everything happens in slow motion! Getting up from bed will take 15 minutes or more, trying to stand up from sitting on the floor will take well let’s say 15 minutes, climbing stairs will take a while, getting in and out of the car will be painful at times, trying to stretch to get a pen from the other side of the table will take longer than you imagine. Get used to it. And take it slow.

Ouch! My pelvic region hurts
Yes, your pelvic region will hurt like crazy! Sitting, standing, walking, turning from side to side, getting up, getting in and out of your car, climbing… Literally everything you do… It will hurt! Yes your doc may give you tablets to counter the pain. But if you are brave enough to face it, be prepared. IT HURTS!

Muscle pulls… Is it for real?
And here’s another treat for your already aching body. Cramps, muscle pulls, whatever you call it… It’s here to stay for a few more months. Take it from me… It lasts just a few minutes, but those few minutes are torture. Brace yourself! They come where ever, whenever! There’s no telling!

It’s only 9.30 in the evening and my eyes aren’t able to stay open!
Yup… The worst part is I love staying up late in the night… Yeah well that ain’t gonna happen ladies. And don’t push yourself to stay awake. If you know there’s something you want to stay up for (in my case watching the FIFA WC matches) sleep early. Don’t give up on sleep. It just makes you cranky and tired and more susceptible to the most horrible thoughts in your head.

Is that baby growing inside me a football player?
Initially when the baby starts kicking it is such a joy! But as the baby grows stronger…Your baby’s going to kick, press, push, punch and I honestly don’t know what else! You are going to lose sleep, get tired faster, feel pain, feel pressure, feel uncomfortable, get distracted easily and lots more. It sure is beautiful to feel your baby moving around but it comes with a price.

I feel like a balloon!
There will be times when you feel like your tummy is a balloon blown to a point where it’s gonna pop! It’s normal. You just have to find a way to let the air out (if you know what I mean!)

My tummy itches
No matter how much rubbing you do, for many people the tummy itches and I’m talking about crazy itching! Ask your doc for any specific cream. Use it!

I’m not saying pregnancy is troublesome. I’m just saying be ready. Your body is going through the most deadly rollercoaster ride in the world. It’s a beautiful experience but with a tag along. It’ll be easier if we are able to accept these things as it comes and move ahead. The moment we start wondering “Oh why and Oh no” it’s just going to get worse. Be prepared to face even more difficult situations. All the above are based on what I’ve gone through. Even after going through all this, I can say I’m enjoying my pregnancy! Shortly I will be stepping into my third trimester. Everybody has told me that it’s going to be the worst of the three trimesters! But I know that I’m going to be bringing a treasure into this world. It’ll all be worth it in the end.

My First Pregnancy – The first few days!

So it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve been pregnant and thought it would be nice to pen down a few ups and many of the downs that I’ve gone through.

So this is how it all started. On February 11th night I had a big fight with my dearest husband! I was so angry that I didn’t talk to him the entire night and the next day. Well but somehow in those days when he was away I knew there was something wrong as I had missed my period and I just wanted to know. So on the 12th I bought a pregnancy test and with thoughts driving me crazy I did the test – I basically peed on that stick!

I saw the first pink line come up and then came the second line! Clear as day! My reaction: “Oh shit!” (Please note: I generally do not use words like that, in fact I hate that word, plus I do not encourage the usage of that word too, but under the given circumstances I guess I excused myself!).
So now I’m torn between calling Aby (my husband) and just waiting for him to come back. But I was so mad at him coz he didn’t call at all and so I did the craziest thing! I sent him a message saying “I’m pregnant!” The worst way to find out! Instantly he called and was like “What? How? Are you sure?” (Well we did a test a week before and it showed negative, so this was a real shock for him). Well we laughed, I cried and all this while he was waiting at the airport to check-in his luggage! I sure was rude! Ah but what you gonna do?

So he comes back home the next morning and he just hugs me and I knew that having this baby was just perfectly timed. So the next day we go to the doc and meet this lady. She says it’s too early to do or say anything. Gives me folic acid tablets to take and sends us on our way home. Ok so I’m psyched that I have no nausea, no cravings, nothing and I’m busy cooking chicken for a pot luck dinner party, enjoying all the food everyone else made – it was on the 14th of Feb! Yes Valentine’s Day.

That Sunday the 16th of Feb is when I started actually feeling the nausea kick in. Gagging for a while with nothing coming out. But that just got me tired! Yet I could still eat anything. So I’m pretty happy.

Two days later we invite a couple home for dinner and as I’m cooking the chicken, I’m feeling weird as ever.  The smell of the chicken is driving me insane! I finally manage to finish cooking. We have a great meal together; I ate a little chicken too. But little did I know that that would be the last non-veg meal I had in a while.

Post that I couldn’t go into the kitchen. Honestly I think I became super-human in a not so nice sense! My nose could smell things that I wouldn’t even bother about generally. The vanilla fragrance from my candle making, the paint smell of the clay pots I painted, the neighbor’s dog-poop smelling compound, the smell of any meat, or masala frying, and much more. I could practically smell these a mile away and the instant I do all my stomach contents would threaten to come right up to my throat and wait there deciding what to do!

That’s when my life saver comes into play. My little yellow lime. It’s the best thing to keep your nose away from smells you hate. And I know the moment I keep the lime near my nose and sniff, I’m good baby! IT’s my drug I tell you! I don’t go out without it. Wait… I don’t go to the next room without it! If at any point my lime isn’t working and it doesn’t give my nose, stomach and mind rest, I know whatever it is has to come out of my system. No choice!

The first time I threw up whatever I ate was on the 18th of Feb. I remember exactly what it was dosa and chutney! By the way, I hate throwing up, like I would rather do anything else than throw up. But well… like I said before – NO CHOICE!

So this is how my day goes… I wake up have something to eat and I’m feeling kinda fine. By 7.30 my nausea kicks in. I have breakfast by 8am; something simple like bread or idly. I eat a small meal by around 11am. My nausea continues till around 12 noon; by that time I’m so tired, I just want to sleep. I rest it out for say an hour or two. Then wake up by 1 and eat again. Sleep again. Wake up again all nauseous. Yeah basically I’m nauseous the entire day! The worst is by the evening around 6 or so. Goodness! And that’s the time I’m most hungry!

So I wanted to check online on what can be done about nausea; if there was any way to stop it. Every site I opened had a picture of a pretty lady with a face looking like as if she’s gonna throw up! And I couldn’t help thinking to myself, damn I wish I looked like that. With all the nausea, the last thing on my mind is if my hair is combed or if my clothes are in good condition, or if my bed’s done. I really don’t care about my disheveled look! I’m just waiting to feel ok; even just a little bit! Whew! Not happening I tell you!

Well anyway back to what I was saying… so many of the sites said eat something salty and many people said to have salt biscuits. It’ll help – they said! So I go to the shop with my husband, buy salt biscuit and come home. I bite into one and realize “oh no, this doesn’t taste one bit nice”! I somehow manage to eat it and I forget about it. The next day sometime in the afternoon I want to eat an apple. So I enjoy the fruit, sharing it with my first baby (yes, our little dog – a Cocker Spaniel named Hazel). Post eating it, I’m feeling a little queasy and think maybe now the salt biscuit will work. So I take a piece and eat it. And what do you know, instantly all I ate – the biscuit and the apple – come gushing out. The saltiness went right through to my nose! Oh I guess each one’s pregnancy is different and everybody’s got to test and try what they can and cannot eat.

Then I got super hungry all over again, this time I asked Aby to get me some vadas and bondas! So after work, he picked some up and came. And I relished every morsel I ate. After about half an hour is when it happened. I couldn’t lie down, couldn’t sit, I knew it was all going to come out and ta da… it did. And all the time I’m throwing up I’m thinking “Oh crap, this doesn’t taste one bit like what went in!” It would be much easier to throw up if it tasted good while coming out too you know! Disgusted? Imagine my plight!

I actually feel a little too much for my dear husband. Imagine this… He comes back from work and I can’t do anything. He heats food, gets the place cleaned up, and I just have no energy to help in any way! And more than that I have my silly flushes of heat and cold. So I’ll be like “Baby will you get me my sweater and socks.” Two minutes later, “Baby can you turn on the fan”. Few minutes later, “Baby please turn off the fan and bring me my blanket na, please!” And a few minutes later, “Baby, I think I need to throw up.” The poor guy! He really didn’t see all this coming. But he’s so gentle and caring. I can’t imagine what I’d do without him.

And of course there’s my little faithful doggie. When Aby’s not home and I end up alone in the bathroom throwing up, she faithfully will come sit next to me, showing me that she’s right there. I guess dogs kinda know, you know. She’s been very gentle with me, won’t jump on me, which is very surprising! She’s adorable! I wonder how she’ll take the new baby in the house!

Today, the 25th of Feb and I’m feeling so much better. My uncle and aunt made some Bisi-bele-bath and I ate little by little. By now I’ve learnt to test my food before slugging it down like a crazy woman. And my tummy took it in well. I ate 5 meals and I’m feeling good baby.
So I’ve written all this and imagine it’s only been 10 days from the start of my nausea! JUST 10 DAYS! And so many people have told me, “Don’t worry Shobs, it’ll be there only for three months and then you’ll be fine!” ONLY THREE MONTHS! Like 90 days and I’m done only with 10! Whew!

Well I guess the story goes to say that honestly I don’t feel a deep rooted connection with the baby growing in me. I’m not very excited either. Maybe it’s because I’m permanently thinking about throwing up, or I’m trying to run away from some smell, or I’m constantly hungry and trying to figure out what I can eat! I guess time will tell how I feel. But it’s ok. Not every relationship starts with butterflies and giggles! Some start tough. I guess they teach you the importance of life and giving life.

Can’t wait for all the trauma of “Oh my gosh, I’m having a baby. How am I gonna handle it all?” Well that has to wait for a few months I guess. Till then…
